Project Update [Mar. 24th, 2007|01:18 pm]
Artistic Expressions of Healing

avaishya
This project took a backseat for a little while, but I am happy to say that the ball is rolling once again! I've recently received a bunch of submissions, and pleased by the quality and emotion of the experiences that women are sharing.
Some of the submissions include photos of yoga, recipes, poetry, short stories, paintings, illustrations, and personal accounts. Of course, all submissions are supported by explanations as to why these mediums aided in the healing process.
I think this is going to be a beautiful book. Progress is coming along a bit slower than I had anticipated, but the quality of submissions make up for the delayed timeline. That said, please spread the word, because the more submissions I receive, the better the book will be and the sooner it will be available for publishing.
Thanks to all the wonderful women who have contributed thus far. I invite everyone to post in this community and to use it as a forum for healing.

Looking For.... [Sep. 1st, 2006|04:31 pm]
Artistic Expressions of Healing

I have received a lot of questions about what I am looking for regarding submissions, so here is a little list to give you an idea:

pictures
poems
stories
songs
recipes
rants
blogs
journal entries
photography
paintings
sketches
symbols
etc....

Anything you did that helped you to heal or cope is a valid submission. For example, if you baked in order to feel better, distract your thoughts, etc. then you could send in some of the recipes you used and why baking aided you. Or if you danced, you could send photos of you dancing and explain how it helped. Submissions that speak of the sexual violence itself are very welcomed (for example, poetry about your experience), but any creation that emerged as a result of the healing process is what I am looking for, even if what is expressed does not mention sexaul trauma directly.
I hope this helps to clarify things!
Thanks to everyone who is taking part in this project- it is a good thing to be putting out into the world.

An Explanation [Jul. 23rd, 2006|12:05 pm]
Artistic Expressions of Healing

avaishya
I was date-raped by my (now ex) boyfriend when I was 18. In the five years that have followed, I have struggled to heal from the trauma in various ways: therapy, poetry, dance, journalling. However, during the first few months I longed for a book that contained expressions of how other sexual abuse survivors healed. I couldn't find anything! Perhaps I did not look hard enough, but either way, a book like that would have been so helpful to me. I wasn't ready to talk to other survivors about my experience, and wasn't ready to share my work, but I would have loved to have had a book to show me how other women coped. I wanted something I could relate to, without having to necessarily get involved.
"The R-Word: Artistic Expressions of Healing" is a book I am compiling so that other women can have what I was searching for. So far, the project itself has been immensely therapeutic and I have enjoyed conversing with other survivors and reviewing their submissions.
